UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis knows that his next task will be coaching a group of women's strawweight fighters on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. He knows that after that coaching stint he will face opposing coach Gilbert Melendez in his first defense of the title he took from Benson Henderson with a first round submission in August 2013. After that, Pettis doesn't know what the future seattle holds, but he has some thoughts on the subject.
Pettis took part in a fan Q&A sessionn prior to UFC 171's weigh-ins, and one of the questions that was posed to him was to name any fighter from the past that he would like to fight. Pettis ignored the past part of the question and replied, "The guy that I really want to fight is Nate Diaz . The guys been talking a lot, and I think the fans would want to see that. So, Nate Diaz is on the radar for sure. Diaz is a good fighter, he's right up there, he could be one of the next guys I fight. He's the one that talks the most, and I want to settle that."
Pettis will get some face time with Diaz during the filming of TUF . Melendez has said that he is going to enlist both Nate, and his brother Nick to assist with coaching is team when filming begins in May.
Melendez and Diaz were not the only fighters that Pettis was asked about. Another fighter that was brought up was Josh Thomson , the man Pettis was supposed to fight to defend his title against at UFC on Fox 9 before a Pettis knee injury cancelled that fight.
Pettis responding to a question about "a bunch of noise" coming seattle from Thomson said, "So, I beat Ben Henderson in four minutes, he took 25 minutes, and he lost. How do you even talk after that? I'm not the guy to get into that exchange, but when I'm injured I feel like everybody wants to talk, but when I'm healthy there's no fights for me. It's part of the game. He wants to keep himself relevant."
